    Set-oriented data mining in relational databases

    Data mining is an important real-life application for businesses. It is critical to find efficient ways of mining large data sets. In order to benefit from the experience with relational databases, a set-oriented approach to mining data is needed. In such an approach, the data mining operations are expressed in terms of relational or set-oriented operations. Query optimization technology can then be used for efficient processing.\ud \ud In this paper, we describe set-oriented algorithms for mining association rules. Such algorithms imply performing multiple joins and thus may appear to be inherently less efficient than special-purpose algorithms. We develop new algorithms that can be expressed as SQL queries, and discuss optimization of these algorithms. After analytical evaluation, an algorithm named SETM emerges as the algorithm of choice. Algorithm SETM uses only simple database primitives, viz., sorting and merge-scan join. Algorithm SETM is simple, fast, and stable over the range of parameter values. It is easily parallelized and we suggest several additional optimizations. The set-oriented nature of Algorithm SETM makes it possible to develop extensions easily and its performance makes it feasible to build interactive data mining tools for large databases

    Pattern of Acute Organophosphorus Poisoning at a Tertiary Care Hospital of Western Maharashtra

    Background: Every year, 3 million cases of pesticide, mainly O.P. poisoning, occurs all over the world. Therefore, statistics regarding O.P. poisoning in a specific region will aid in the early diagnosis and treatment of cases. The main objective of this research project is to find out the pattern of O.P. poisoning cases at the tertiary care center. Methods: We conducted a retrospective cross-sectional study, in which we analyzed data from 40 cases of O.P. poisoning, including patient information regarding gender, age, time of ingestion, type of poison, mode of poisoning, any first aid received, treatment given, duration of hospital stay and outcome of the treatment. Results: There were 16 females (40%) and 24 males (60%). The most common age group was 21 to 40 years, with 19 participants (47.50%). The majority of the participants were from the rural area, 38 cases (95%), while in 36 cases, the poisoning was suicidal (90%). 28 participants (70%) received some form of first aid. In addition, 21 of the participants received Atropine (52.50%), 13 received only gastric lavage (32.50%), 5 received both Atropine and Pralidoxime (12.50%), while one patient only received Pralidoxime (2.5%) as treatment. I.C.U. admission was required in 39 participants (97.50%), and ventilatory support was required in 2 participants (5%). Our study observed 4 deaths (10%) amongst our participants. The multivariate analysis of deaths in our study showed that specifically not receiving any first aid (p = 0.039) and requirement of the ventilator (p<0.001) were seen to have a significant association with deaths in our study. Conclusion: O.P. poisoning is the commonest cause of suicidal deaths in developing countries. Creating awareness regarding O.P. poisoning and legislative action on using hazardous poisons will help reduce the deaths

    A Design of Experiment Approach for Optimization and Characterization of Clarithromycin Ternary System Using Spray Drying

    The aim of present work was to characterize Clarithromycin (CLT), Polyvinyl pyrrolidone K30 (PVP K30) and Hydroxypropyl β-cyclodextrin (HPB) ternary system so as to check the effect of complexation on solubility of CLT. Physical mixtures of a drug and polymers in several weight ratios (1:1, 1:2) were prepared to check the effect of individual polymers on solubility of CLT. Spray drying method was accustomed investigate the combined effect of PVP K30 and HPB on Drug release (DR), Dissolution efficiency (DE) and mean dissolution time (MDT) of CLT. For the preparation and optimization of ternary system the Design of experiment (DoE) was used . Drug polymer interactions were analyzed with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and particle size analysis. Results of solubility study suggested that there was significant increase in solubility of CLT with increase within the concentration of PVP K30 and HPB (*p<0.05). This may be thanks to the solubilizing effect of PVP K30 and sophisticated formation of CLT with HPB. Various combinations of PVP K30 and HPB prepared using DoE approach by spray drying method showed greater solubility of CLT than its physical mixtures (*p<0.05). Results of FTIR, DSC, XRD and particle size analysis revealed the interaction between CLT, PVP K30 and HPB. This suggested formation of amorphous ternary system with mean particle diameter within the range of 312±1.35 nm. Combine use of PVP K30 and HPB with DoE approach was an efficient tool for formulating ternary system of CLT.     Determinants of the exit decision of foreign banks in India

    There is hardly any study in the existing literature regarding the foreign banks’ exit decision in India. This study tries to identify the CAMEL (i.e., C=Capital adequacy, A=Asset quality, M=Management decision, E=Earning ability and L=liquidity) variables that could qualify as the determinant of foreign banks closing their business operations in India which entered after the financial sector reforms. Logistic Regression Model was used to identify the risk factors associated with the closure of business-operation of foreign banks in India. It seems that foreign banks with higher non-performing assets (NPAs), lower return on equity and lesser profit per employee were more likely to close their business in India than otherwise

    Efficient similarity search in sequence databases

    We propose an indexing method for time sequences for processing similarity queries. We use the Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) to map time sequences to the frequency domain, the crucial observation being that, for most sequences of practical interest, only the first few frequencies are strong. Another important observation is Parseval's theorem, which specifies that the Fourier transform preserves the Euclidean distance in the time or frequency domain. Having thus mapped sequences to a lower-dimensionality space by using only the first few Fourier coe cients, we use R-trees to index the sequences and e ciently answer similarity queries. We provide experimental results which show that our method is superior to search based on sequential scanning. Our experiments show that a few coefficients (1-3) are adequate to provide good performance. The performance gain of our method increases with the number and length of sequences

One of the problems with traditional clustering methods is that they require the analyst to define distance functions that are not always available. In this paper, we describe a new method for clustering without distance functions. 1 Introduction Mining for information from databases has several important applications [11]. Three of the most common methods to mine data are association rules [1, 2], classification [7], and clustering [8, 3]. Association rules derive patterns from grouped data attributes that co-occur with high frequency. Classification methods produce hierarchical decision models for input data that is sub-divided into classes. Finally, clustering methods group together the records of a data set into disjoint sets that are similar in some respect. Clustering also attempts to place dissimilar records in different partitions.
